The Catapano Farms Pansy Story A perfect combination of modern plant breeding and old fashioned growing methods make our Pansys the very best you can buy!
Most of the modern greenhouse plant factories churn out Pansys with the rest of their spring annuals as part of their fast turnover crops. But good Pansys cant be grown like a Marigold or an Impatiens. To be really enjoyed Pansys need to planted early in spring as they go dormant when the summer heat arrives. And to have a Pansy plant that can take the vagaries of the early spring weather you dont want some plant that has been pushed to meet a growers crop deadline. On our travels we often see Pansys that have been overwatered, overfed and pushed to meet tight crop schedules. At Catapano Farms we do things a different way - the old fashioned way. And that means better Pansys!
We're not afraid of the new. Every year we research and select the very best Pansy seed we can find. Products of the finest breeding programs the world over. And for the past few years we have been very happy with the Matrix series by Pan American Seed - superior breeding by some of the best plantsmen in the business. Pan American has really created a winner here - Matrix Pansy seed is bred to produce strong, stocky plants that cover the soil before initiating blooms without stretching. This assures more flowers per plant in landscapes and containers.
Then we take the very best of the Pansy varieties and we grow them the old fashioned way. We don't heat them and push them in the spring. We seed our Pansys in the fall and plant them before Thanksgiving in our Special Jumbo Packs. Each plant has a generous amount of room and gets a good start before the cold weather moves in. Then we 'put them to bed' after Christmas in our unheated greenhouses. There are times we come in to check on the plants in January and February and the soil is frozen solid! But don't worry - growing Pansys long and cold gives the plants tone and strength. And they are going to need that tone and strength when they face late spring frosts outside at your home.
When the days start getting longer and the snow starts to melt we are in the greenhouses waking the Pansys up with a soft spring feeding. Still no artificial heat, no pushing. And finally as spring approaches and flowers begin to come up from the foliage the plants are rolled outside on our special rolling benches. Out during the day, in at night - like a modern day cold frame! That exposes the new growth to full sunlight, hardens the new flowers to withstand cold, and generally tones the plants up. The result is stocky, healthy plants, ready to explode into bloom at your home.
Our Pansys make great gifts - what can better than opening up a box of living spring goodness? Or treat yourself to the magic of Pansys grown like they should - the old fashioned way. The Catapano Farms way, just like my Dad has been doing since 1956.
From our house to your house - Enjoy!
